Portal Knights is a cooperative sandbox RPG which mixes elements of block-building and role-playing games. The Surge is a sci-fi themed action RPG developed by German studio Deck13 and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game is set in a dystopian world ravaged by war and global warming, and takes place in an automated industrial complex of mega-corporation CREO which has gone rogue. While the hostile mechanical monstrosities prowling the complex pose a lethal threat, the protagonist is an augmented, exo-suit wearing human who is up for the challenge.

The developers promise a hardcore and unforgiving, Souls-like experience where even the weaker enemies are deadly if the player isn’t aware of their attack patterns and weaknesses. From Yasuhiro Wada, the creator of the Harvest Moon series, comes a new sandbox title called Birthdays the Beginning. The game allows the players to create cube-shaped worlds and fill them with mountains, forests, and seas. Altering the world’s geography and temperature gives rise to life forms, which continue to evolve and adapt to the environment, eventually resulting in the birth of an entire ecosystem.

In addition to sandbox gameplay, Birthdays the Beginning also has a challenge mode, which adds various success conditions to the game. Prey is an upcoming first-person shooter developed by Arkane Studios (known for their work on the Dishonored franchise) and published by Bethesda Softworks. The game takes place in a space station Talos I, where research on an alien species called Typhon is performed until the non-terrestrials escape containment, slaughtering most of the crew members.

The player steps into the shoes of Morgan Yu, a high-ranking executive at the TranStar Corporation, who has to brave the isolated space station overrun with hostile aliens. Little Nightmares is a puzzle-platformer made by independent developer Tarsier Studios. The game follows Six, a little girl in an oversized yellow raincoat, who is trapped in a mysterious and gloomy prison called The Maw. Armed with nothing but her wits and a lighter, Six has to evade the Maw’s monstrous residents, and make her way to the outside world.

Dawn of War III is an upcoming real-time strategy title developed by Relic Entertainment and Sega, and set in the WH40k universe from Games Workshop. The playable factions available in the game are Space Marines of the Blood Ravens Chapter, who will be familiar to anyone who played the previous Dawn of War installments, as well as the Eldar and the Orks. The three will battle over the legendary Spear of Khaine recently discovered on the lost planet of Acheron.

The game also offers a multiplayer mode, which is said to borrow heavily from the MOBA genre. Common elements include three-lane maps, an emphasis on Elite units, and destroying enemy’s turrets before taking down their core, as reported by Eurogamer.

Syberia 3 is an upcoming adventure game developed by French studio Microïds, with story and design by Benoît Sokal. Like the previous installments, it follows American lawyer Kate Walker on her journey throughout fictionalized versions of Europe and Russia.

Syberia 3 begins with Kate being found on the edge of a river by the Youkole tribe, a nomadic people migrating with their snow ostriches. Stuck in Valsembor village, they must find a way to continue their journey together. The game features a brand new adventure, and is said to be “completely different” from the previous two Syberia titles.

Dragon Quest Heroes II is a hack-and-slash action RPG which combines the world and characters of Dragon Quest with combat mechanics from Dynasty Warriors. Players will set out on a new adventure to protect the Seven Realms, battling hordes of monsters and exploring diverse and expansive environments. The playstyle is said to be more customizable than in the first installment thanks to the ability to change vocations (Warrior, Priest, Mage, and so on). The game supports online co-op for up to 4 players.

The latest release from Ready At Dawn Studios is Deformers, a physics-based multiplayer arena brawler with a colorful, cartoonish art style. Up to eight players will shoot, ram, and throw each other off the arena, powering up and increasing the size of their squishy Form as they go on.

The game features several modes such as free-for-all, Form Ball, and team deathmatch. There also is a variety of maps including symmetrical, multi-tiered, and asymmetrical ones.

Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom is an action RPG developed by French indie studio Enigami, and published by Focus Home Interactive. The crowdfunded game features manga-style art, and in fact has a companion manga series, which offers clues towards discovering hidden quests.

Yooka-Laylee is a 3D platformer developed by Playtonic Games and published by Team17. Successfully funded via Kickstarter, the game’s development team includes key personnel who worked on Banjo-Kazooie, which the upcoming Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor to.

The game follows the eponymous Yooka and Laylee, a buddy duo who embark on an adventure to thwart corporate creep Capital B’s plan to absorb all the world’s books and turn them into pure profit. Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is a remastered version of the 2011 title Bulletstorm, which was released on last-gen consoles. The remake brings updated models, environments, and animations, with smoother framerates and 4K support on PS4 Pro and PC. It includes all DLC from the original, as well as new content such as Overkill campaign mode and new Echo maps.

LEGO City Undercover, the open-world action-adventure game which had a rather successful launch on the Wii U back in 2013, is getting ported to current-gen consoles including the new Nintendo Switch. The title is developed by TT Fusion and published by Warner Bros.

Taking place in the sprawling Lego City, the game follows a cop named Chase McCain whose many talents include piloting every possible vehicle, using loose bricks to build various objects, and disguising himself to infiltrate criminal gangs. Due to its cartoonish, action-filled gameplay and easy humor, LEGO City Undercover has been called a “kid-friendly Grand Theft Auto” by VentureBeat.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is an isometric action RPG developed by Games Farm and published by Kalypso Media. The game’s world is based on Norse mythology, with mighty Jotan and terrifying undead monsters roaming the lands. As deadly Fimbulwinter winds blow across Midgard, and Ragnarok seems all but inevitable, a band of notorious Viking warriors – the eponymous Wolves of Midgard – stand defiant against the oncoming armies of Frost Giants. The player takes on the role of the clan’s chieftain, as either a warrior or a shieldmaiden.

Mass Effect: Andromeda puts the player into the shoes of Ryder, a Pathfinder tasked with finding new worlds to colonize and ensure the survival of humanity. The game starts with the main character arriving in the titular Andromeda galaxy after a six hundred year long cryosleep. Representatives of other major Milky Way civilizations are also making the journey on their own Ark ships, and Andromeda itself is home to at least two new alien races: the warlike Khet and the mysterious Remnant.

Andromeda retains most of the gameplay elements seen in the previous Mass Effect installments. Toukiden 2 is an upcoming action RPG developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. Set two years after the events in Kiwami, it follows a Slayer who fought in the defense of the city of Yokohama and was swallowed by a portal, emerging in Mahoroba Village ten years later with no memories of the past.

One major change from its predecessors is that Toukiden 2 now features an open world, with Mahoroba Village serving as the game’s main hub. The entire cast of Slayers, as well as non-combatant NPCs, make a return in the upcoming title. There also are new characters, Oni, and Mitama.

Styx: Shards of Darkness is a fantasy-themed action RPG with a focus on stealth. Like its predecessors Of Orcs And Men and Styx: Master of Shadows, it is developed by Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive, both French companies. The game runs on a new engine (Unreal 4) and offers many improvements thanks to its bigger budget, according to the publisher.

Shards of Darkness picks up where Master of Shadows left off. After the fall of the Akenash tower, the eponymous goblin assassin, Styx, is forced out of hiding to infiltrate Körangar. While this city of the Dark Elves is supposedly impregnable, a diplomatic summit offers Styx a chance to slip in unnoticed. There, he learns that elves and dwarves, who are enemies of old, are joining forces against the goblins.
