Yooka-Laylee is a 3D platformer developed by Playtonic Games and published by Team17. Successfully funded via Kickstarter, the game’s development team includes key personnel who worked on Banjo-Kazooie, which the upcoming Yooka-Laylee is a spiritual successor to.

The game follows the eponymous Yooka and Laylee, a buddy duo who embark on an adventure to thwart corporate creep Capital B’s plan to absorb all the world’s books and turn them into pure profit. The two characters have unlockable abilities, and gameplay can be further customized by equipping Play Tonics to enhance their stats or provide entertaining visual effects. Starblood Arena is a PlayStation VR game where players pilot deadly spaceships in fast-paced arena combat. Each of the nine ships has its own loadout and playstyle, and further weapon and auxiliary modifications can be unlocked by progressing through the matches. The game offers single player Carnage deathmatches, Team Carnage deathmatches, and Invaders co-op modes, with PS Plus membership required for multiplayer.

Bulletstorm: Full Clip Edition is a remastered version of the 2011 title Bulletstorm, which was released on last-gen consoles. The remake brings updated models, environments, and animations, with smoother framerates and 4K support on PS4 Pro and PC. It includes all DLC from the original, as well as new content such as Overkill campaign mode and new Echo maps.

Bulletstorm is known for its liberal use of profanities and crass humor reminiscent of the Duke Nukem franchise. Persona 5 is a role-playing game developed by Atlus for PlayStation 3 & 4. It follows a 16-year-old protagonist who is transferred to a high school in Tokyo after being put on probation for assaulting a stalker. He and several other students awaken their Persona powers and form a group called the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, the goal of which is to steal ill intent from the hearts of corrupt adults and reform them.

Just like its predecessors, Persona 5 takes place over the course of one year, with lots of events and side activities. The game’s main themes are freedom and justice in the modern society.

LEGO City Undercover, the open-world action-adventure game which had a rather successful launch on the Wii U back in 2013, is getting ported to current-gen consoles including the new Nintendo Switch. The title is developed by TT Fusion and published by Warner Bros.

Taking place in the sprawling Lego City, the game follows a cop named Chase McCain whose many talents include piloting every possible vehicle, using loose bricks to build various objects, and disguising himself to infiltrate criminal gangs. Due to its cartoonish, action-filled gameplay and easy humor, LEGO City Undercover has been called a “kid-friendly Grand Theft Auto” by VentureBeat.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is an isometric action RPG developed by Games Farm and published by Kalypso Media. The game’s world is based on Norse mythology, with mighty Jotan and terrifying undead monsters roaming the lands. As deadly Fimbulwinter winds blow across Midgard, and Ragnarok seems all but inevitable, a band of notorious Viking warriors – the eponymous Wolves of Midgard – stand defiant against the oncoming armies of Frost Giants. The player takes on the role of the clan’s chieftain, as either a warrior or a shieldmaiden.

The game can be played solo or in a two player online co-op. The “New Game+” feature provides a measure of replayability, and a special challenge mode called “Trials of the Gods” rewards the best fighters with powerful equipment and runes.

Mass Effect: Andromeda puts the player into the shoes of Ryder, a Pathfinder tasked with finding new worlds to colonize and ensure the survival of humanity. The game starts with the main character arriving in the titular Andromeda galaxy after a six hundred year long cryosleep. Representatives of other major Milky Way civilizations are also making the journey on their own Ark ships, and Andromeda itself is home to at least two new alien races: the warlike Khet and the mysterious Remnant.

Andromeda retains most of the gameplay elements seen in the previous Mass Effect installments. Nexus, the Flagship of the fleet, serves as a Citadel-esque central hub, whereas Ryder can explore the new galaxy on Tempest, the successor of Normandy. Guns and biotics, the dialogue wheel, romance sub-plots, and multiplayer co-op all make a reappearance. In a departure from the original trilogy, however, Mass Effect: Andromeda is open-world and features a classless character advancement system, allowing the player to freely mix-and-match different abilities.

Toukiden 2 is an upcoming action RPG developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. Set two years after the events in Kiwami, it follows a Slayer who fought in the defense of the city of Yokohama and was swallowed by a portal, emerging in Mahoroba Village ten years later with no memories of the past.

One major change from its predecessors is that Toukiden 2 now features an open world, with Mahoroba Village serving as the game’s main hub. The entire cast of Slayers, as well as non-combatant NPCs, make a return in the upcoming title. There also are new characters, Oni, and Mitama.

Styx: Shards of Darkness is a fantasy-themed action RPG with a focus on stealth. Like its predecessors Of Orcs And Men and Styx: Master of Shadows, it is developed by Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive, both French companies. The game runs on a new engine (Unreal 4) and offers many improvements thanks to its bigger budget, according to the publisher.

Shards of Darkness picks up where Master of Shadows left off. After the fall of the Akenash tower, the eponymous goblin assassin, Styx, is forced out of hiding to infiltrate Körangar. While this city of the Dark Elves is supposedly impregnable, a diplomatic summit offers Styx a chance to slip in unnoticed. There, he learns that elves and dwarves, who are enemies of old, are joining forces against the goblins.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is an open-world, third-person shooter developed by Ubisoft Paris. Set in Bolivia, the game puts the player in the shoes of an elite special forces operative tasked with destroying Santa Blanca, a massive drug cartel that is plunging the country into chaos. It is said to be one of the largest open world games from the company yet, featuring diverse South American landscapes ranging from mountains and deserts to rainforests.

The game has 100 missions which can be completed in any order and using different approaches such as stealthy infiltration, long-range sniping, or frontal assault. The player can tackle them with the assistance of an AI squad or alongside their friends; Wildlands supports up to four-player co-op with seamless drop-in, drop-out play. NieR: Automata is an action RPG developed by Japanese studio PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. It is set in an open world and contains three playable characters, which are unlocked after clearing the previous protagonist’s story route.

The game follows a 15-year-old girl named Firis, who lives in an isolated mining town and yearns to venture to the outside world. When the protagonist of the previous game, Sophie, visits the town, Firis jumps at the chance to become her apprentice. However, Firis must become a certified alchemist in just one year if her parents are to allow her to continue her travels.

Horizon Zero Dawn is a PlayStation-exclusive action RPG developed by Guerrilla Games, the makers of Killzone. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by dinosaur-like machines which have evolved to become a part of the planet’s ecosystem. The remnants of humanity now live in primitive tribal settlements, hunting the robotic wildlife for their components.

The main character of the game is Aloy, a young woman who seeks to uncover the truth behind the fall of the ancient civilization. The game features a vast open world with no loading screens, and plenty of side-quests in addition to the main story.

Torment: Tides of Numenera is an old-school RPG developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Techland Publishing. Having raised over $5 million through Kickstarter, it holds the honor of being one of the highest-funded games on the platform. Along with titles like Pillars of Eternity and Wasteland 2, it is considered a part of the classic RPG renaissance seen in the recent years.

Like its title suggests, Tides of Numenera is a thematic successor to the 1999 cult-classic Planescape: Torment. The new game adheres to the “four pillars” which made Torment so great: a deep, thematically satisfying story, an original setting, a rich, personal narrative, and meaningful consequences of the player’s choices. Adapted from the popular manga series Berserk, this M-rated hack-and-slash game follows lone mercenary Guts in his quest to take down every last one of the demonic Apostles. Armed with a vast array of different weapons, players can utilize them to their full potential against hordes of enemies in Dynasty Warriors style, one-vs-many battles. Berserk and the Band of the Hawk includes as many as eight playable characters (such as Griffith, Casca, and Schierke), each with their own different fighting styles.

The game is developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo for PlayStation 4, PS Vita, and Windows in the West. The Japanese version, titled Berserk Musou, also received a PS3 release. It follows “Golden Age” through “Hawk of the Millennium Empire” arcs of the Berserk manga.

For Honor is a hack-and-slash title developed by Ubisoft Montreal for Windows and current-gen consoles. The game has three factions – the Knights, the Samurai, and the Vikings – with four classes each, wielding authentic weapons and possessing distinct combat abilities.

There is a story campaign as well as different multiplayer modes including PvP, which appears to be the focus of the game. In particular, the developers laud the “Art of Battle” system which gives the players finer control over their character during duels, allowing them to react to the moves of their opponent by parrying and counter-attacking.

Sniper Elite 4 is a tactical shooter from English studio Rebellion Developments. It plays much like its predecessors, with a third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective except when sniping. The series’ signature X-Ray Kill Cam has been expanded to also include Shrapnel and Melee kills. Tagging enemies through the binoculars now provide short biographies, making the kills more personal. The AI is also improved, and killing an officer, for example, will have a larger effect on the enemy army.

The game takes place in 1943 Italy, with protagonist Karl Fairburne once again returning to fight the Axis forces. The maps are larger and have more verticality, including diverse locations like coastal towns and mountainous forests.

Ride 2 is a motorcycle racing title developed by Milestone S.r.l., a video game studio based in Milan, Italy, and specializing in racing simulators. Like its predecessor, Ride 2 aims to provide a highly realistic experience, with an accurate physics engine and true-to-world graphics. The game features over 230 licensed bikes, all of which are highly customizable using over 1,200 real-world parts and accessories. Even the rider has many options in clothing, riding style, and gear.

American fans were in an unenviable position when the game’s release was delayed in the NA, while going ahead as scheduled in Europe. However, they can take solace in the fact that nine free DLC packs will launch from February to July, and the game will also have a Day One Edition with added bonuses. Square Enix is to publish Ride 2 in the region.
