Dragon Quest Builders is an action RPG with voxel-based block building elements developed and published by Square Enix. A spin-off from the original series, the game tasks the player with rebuilding the land of Alefgard which was devastated by monsters after the hero’s demise.

Unlike true sandbox games like Minecraft, the world of Dragon Quest Builders is handcrafted rather than procedurally generated, and the game has quests and a storyline to advance through. Mafia III is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. It follows a new protagonist, Lincoln Clay, and takes place in 1968 New Bordeaux (a fictional version of New Orleans). After returning from the Vietnam War, Lincoln rejoins the black mob, only to have his comrades slaughtered by the Italian mafia. A sole survivor, he sets out to get revenge and build his own criminal empire.

Mafia III allows for different approaches to completing missions, such as going in with guns blazing, or using stealth. The game features a cover system, executions, and melee combat. Players can also roam the game’s world freely, and take over locations operated by the Italian mob.

FIFA 17 is the latest soccer title from the experienced sports game developer EA Canada. It features significant changes and improvements over its predecessor, first and foremost being the switch from Ignite to the more advanced Frostbite graphics engine. Another big addition is The Journey mode, in which the player assumes the role of Premier League’s next rising star, Alex Hunter. While it plays just like the Be A Pro mode on the field, there also are scripted events with multiple dialogue options.

As a result of a fan vote, FIFA 17 now features Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund on its cover. NBA 2K17 is a basketball simulator developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K Sports for current- and last-gen consoles as well as Windows. The cover art for the game features Paul George of Indiana Pacers, who is said to be an avid NBA 2K player himself. Rise of Iron is the fourth expansion to online shooter Destiny, which brings a story campaign set within a new location on Earth called The Plaguelands. The expansion also features a new Strike and Raid, new Crucible mode and maps, new gear, and an additional enemy faction, the Fallen.

Destiny: Rise of Iron is the first expansion to only support the current-gen consoles. Starting with August 16, Destiny will no longer receive any major updates on PS3 and Xbox 360, and player progression will be separated from Xbox One and PS4 platforms. According to EA Canada, their latest NHL installment brings three new game modes (Draft Champions, World Cup of Hockey, and Franchise Mode) and adds a plethora of improvements to existing ones. Fan-favorite EASHL gets a Player Rank progression system for earning customization items, a Team Editor, and an Arena Creator which is also usable in the Franchise Mode. There also are changes to gameplay mechanics such as Net Battles for offensive and defensive zone play, or the new Reactionary Save Intelligence aimed at making goaltending more realistic.

NHL 17 features Vladimir Tarasenko as its cover athlete. The St. Louis Blues forward was chosen after a fan vote on NHL.com and Twitter, where more than six million votes were cast in total.

NASCAR Heat Evolution is a racing game developed by Monster Games and published by Dusenberry Martin Racing (DMR) for current-gen consoles and Windows. It includes all 23 tracks from the 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as well as 43 drivers from the most popular race teams. The game features a dynamic AI system which adjusts to the player’s skill level. There are several game modes: Race, Season, Chase, Career, Online, and Challenges. Assetto Corsa is a racing sim developed by an Italian studio KUNOS Simulazioni and published by 505 Games for the current-gen consoles. The game prides itself on realism and features an advanced physics system, over ninety authentic cars reproduced in collaboration with automotive manufacturers, and more than twenty track configurations recreated using laser scan technology. There is both single player and multiplayer functionality, with different game modes available.

Assetto Corsa has been out on PC since 2014, and several “Dream Packs” containing new circuits and cars have been released for the platform. All of these will be included as part of the base game ($49.99) on Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst is an enhanced version of the 2013 action RPG God Eater 2, developed by Japanese studio Shift and published by Namco Bandai in the West. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where gigantic monsters called Aragami seek to devour humanity. Only elite warriors called God Eaters can stand up to the threat by using God Arcs – weapons infused with Oracle Cells taken from Aragami themselves.

Attack on Titan is an upcoming action game based on a popular Japanese manga and anime series of the same name. It is developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. While the game originally only launched on PlayStation consoles in Japan, the Western release will also include Xbox One and Windows (Steam) versions.

Attack on Titan features the key moments and characters from the anime, and offers some additional content as well. Players battle Titans, accomplish missions, and earn resources used to upgrade their swords and 3D maneuver gear. Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is an upcoming cyberpunk-themed action RPG developed by Eidos Montreal. Set two years after the events of Human Revolution, it follows the same protagonist Adam Jensen, who is now working for an anti-terrorist organization called Task Force 29.

The game is fundamentally similar to its predecessor, allowing different approaches to achieve your goals and featuring mechanics like hacking and conversation battles. There are new augmentations, weapons, and ammo types available. In addition, Mankind Divided is said to have more verticality and give the player more freedom of movement than before.

The sequel also comes with a standalone game mode called Breach, where players assume the role of a hacker infiltrating and stealing data from servers using a virtual reality interface. The mode plays like an arcade shooter, complete with a scoring system and leaderboards.

Madden NFL 17 is the latest installment in the popular football game franchise, made by the usual developers, EA Tiburon, for current and last-gen consoles. The upcoming title is said to offer the most balanced gameplay to date, bringing new ball carrier feedback cues, defender fake out mechanics, and an authentic defensive AI system based on modern NFL strategies.

No Man’s Sky is a space adventure game developed by indie studio Hello Games and published by Sony (PS4) and iam8bit (PC). It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “open world”, featuring an effectively infinite, procedurally-generated universe with billions of star systems. Players can explore the galaxy on their spaceship, land on planets, discover new forms of flora and fauna, and fight or trade with various NPC factions. The ultimate goal is journeying towards the center of the galaxy, but the increasingly hostile environments will require upgrades to the player’s ship, space suit, and multi-tool.

As all the planets are generated on-the-fly, the game can be played offline. However, No Man’s Sky does have some multiplayer elements, such as crediting the first player to discover a certain planet or a lifeform.

Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is the fifth main installment in the Star Ocean action RPG franchise by tri-Ace. The sci-fi themed game features character designs by akiman (Akira Yasuda), notable for his work on Street Fighter and other successful series. It is published by Square Enix for the PlayStation 4 consoles in the West (only Japan gets a PS3 release).

Chronologically, the upcoming title takes place between the second and the third installments (Star Ocean: The Second Story and Star Ocean: Till the End of Time.) LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a LEGO-themed action-adventure game developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros for all major gaming platforms. While mostly based on the eponymous movie, it also includes content which covers the events between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The gameplay is said to be similar to that of its predecessors, but LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens does include some new mechanics, such as space dogfights, Blaster Battles which use a cover system, and Multi-Builds where players can choose from multiple building options to solve puzzles and open up new paths.

Grand Kingdom is a tactical turn-based JRPG developed by studio MonoChro and published by NIS America in the US. The game is set in a medieval fantasy world where four major nations are battling for dominance. It offers an expansive single-player campaign as well as online war mode where players fight for one of the Four Great Nations. Cross-play, but not cross-save, is supported between PS4 and the Vita.

Grand Kingdom has been out in Japan since November 2015, and a number of paid DLC was released so far. The good news is that the Western release will include all this content free of charge. Mighty No. 9 is a side-scrolling platformer developed by Inti Creates and Keiji Inafune’s Comcept. Touted as a spiritual successor to the Mega Man franchise, the game raised $3.8 million on Kickstarter and was developed with significant input from the Beckers (a pun on the protagonist’s name). According to the developers, they intend to bring the best elements of the classic 8- and 16-bit era titles to the modern gaming platforms.

PlayStation owners will be happy to learn that Mighty No. 9 features Cross-Buy across PS4, PS3 and PS Vita. The game is 3D-enabled on the 3DS, and supports Wii U’s GamePad. The system requirements for the PC version have also been announced, and can be found on the official website.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by EA DICE. It is a reboot of the 2008’s title Mirror’s Edge, and features the same protagonist, Faith, who rebels against the totalitarian government in the futuristic City of Glass.

The changes in Catalyst go beyond next-gen graphics. The game is now open-world (and without loading screens to boot), has more freedom of traversal, and offers multiple paths of reaching your destination. The combat system has also been overhauled, focusing on melee attacks and parkour movements, and removing the usage of guns entirely. In addition, Faith actually gets character development, going from a troubled young woman to a fierce heroine.

While the new Mirror’s Edge doesn’t have live multiplayer, it does feature some asynchronous multiplayer elements where your actions can affect the game world of other players. There are also leaderboards for extra game modes such as time trials and races.

Leifthrasir is a HD remake of the 2007 side-scrolling action RPG Odin Sphere, developed by Vanillaware and published by Atlus for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and the Vita. The story is set in a fantasy world called Erion and features five protagonists, each representing a different warring nation.

The original game was praised for its hand-drawn art style, and players will now be able to experience it in 1080p and 60 FPS. Leifthrasir is also said to bring refined controls and gameplay mechanics, additional stages and enemies, and both Japanese and English voiceovers.
