Cave Story is a metroidvania-style 2D action platformer originally developed by Daisuke Amaya for the PC back in 2004, and later ported to numerous other platforms by Nicalis. The game follows an amnesiac protagonist who wakes up in a cave and becomes embroiled in a conflict between its inhabitants and a mad Doctor trying to conquer the world.

RiME is an upcoming puzzle adventure game developed by Tequila Works, and published by Grey Box and Six Foot. It follows a young boy who gets shipwrecked on a mysterious island following a torrential storm. Guided by a helpful fox companion, players must use their wits to solve challenges with sound, light and shadow projection, perspective, platforming, and even time manipulation.

Syberia 3 is an upcoming adventure game developed by French studio Microïds, with story and design by Benoît Sokal. Like the previous installments, it follows American lawyer Kate Walker on her journey throughout fictionalized versions of Europe and Russia.

Syberia 3 begins with Kate being found on the edge of a river by the Youkole tribe, a nomadic people migrating with their snow ostriches. Stuck in Valsembor village, they must find a way to continue their journey together. LEGO City Undercover, the open-world action-adventure game which had a rather successful launch on the Wii U back in 2013, is getting ported to current-gen consoles including the new Nintendo Switch. The title is developed by TT Fusion and published by Warner Bros.

Taking place in the sprawling Lego City, the game follows a cop named Chase McCain whose many talents include piloting every possible vehicle, using loose bricks to build various objects, and disguising himself to infiltrate criminal gangs. The Binding of Isaac, a popular 2D action RPG with roguelike elements, is about to see a release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch platform. Made by independent developer Nicalis, the game has enjoyed great popularity on the PC, consoles, and handhelds so far.

Styx: Shards of Darkness is a fantasy-themed action RPG with a focus on stealth. Like its predecessors Of Orcs And Men and Styx: Master of Shadows, it is developed by Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive, both French companies. The game runs on a new engine (Unreal 4) and offers many improvements thanks to its bigger budget, according to the publisher.

Shards of Darkness picks up where Master of Shadows left off. After the fall of the Akenash tower, the eponymous goblin assassin, Styx, is forced out of hiding to infiltrate Körangar. While this city of the Dark Elves is supposedly impregnable, a diplomatic summit offers Styx a chance to slip in unnoticed. There, he learns that elves and dwarves, who are enemies of old, are joining forces against the goblins.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is Nintendo’s highly-anticipated action-adventure game which takes players back to Hyrule. The game begins with the series’ protagonist Link awakening from a long slumber by a mysterious voice that guides him to fight Calamity Ganon, who has been sealed in the Hyrule Castle for a century.

Gravity Rush 2 is an action-adventure game developed by SIE Japan Studio and Project Siren, and published by Sony. Like one might guess from the title, the player’s ability to manipulate gravity is at the core of the gameplay, allowing for unique navigation and movement.

Its director and designer is Fumito Ueda, who is known for his work on Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Dishonored 2 is an action-stealth game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda. It gives the players a choice of stepping back into the shoes of Corvo Attano, the protagonist of the previous installment, or playing as Emily Kaldwin, the daughter of the Empress. ReCore is an action-adventure game with some with puzzle and platform elements developed by Comcept and Armature Studio. The game’s protagonist is Joule Adams, one of the last remaining humans in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by mechanical enemies of all shapes. Joule is aided by her own robotic companions called Corebots, each of which has unique abilities to aid their fearless leader in her journey.

No Man’s Sky is a space adventure game developed by indie studio Hello Games and published by Sony (PS4) and iam8bit (PC). It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “open world”, featuring an effectively infinite, procedurally-generated universe with billions of star systems. Players can explore the galaxy on their spaceship, land on planets, discover new forms of flora and fauna, and fight or trade with various NPC factions. The ultimate goal is journeying towards the center of the galaxy, but the increasingly hostile environments will require upgrades to the player’s ship, space suit, and multi-tool.
