Mafia III is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Hangar 13 and published by 2K Games. It follows a new protagonist, Lincoln Clay, and takes place in 1968 New Bordeaux (a fictional version of New Orleans). After returning from the Vietnam War, Lincoln rejoins the black mob, only to have his comrades slaughtered by the Italian mafia. A sole survivor, he sets out to get revenge and build his own criminal empire.

Mafia III allows for different approaches to completing missions, such as going in with guns blazing, or using stealth. The game features a cover system, executions, and melee combat. Players can also roam the game’s world freely, and take over locations operated by the Italian mob.

Gears of War 4 Box Art

Gears of War 4 is a third-person shooter developed by Microsoft-owned The Coalition studio. The game takes place on the planet of Sera, 25 years after the Imulsion Countermeasure Weapon was used to great effect. The remainder of the population now lives in walled-of cities, excluding the Outsiders which raid the COG territories for resources. Gears of War 4 follows a new protagonist, JD Fenix (the son of Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud) who, alongside his comrades Delmont “Del” Walker and Kait Diaz, has to deal with a new threat to humanity.

The fourth main Gears of War installment features overhauled cover mechanics and several new weapons. There is a two-player co-op where the second player can select either Kait or Del and play online or via split-screen. The game also offers competitive multiplayer at 60 FPS (the campaign runs at 30) with dedicated severs and new modes.

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens Box Art

LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a LEGO-themed action-adventure game developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros for all major gaming platforms. While mostly based on the eponymous movie, it also includes content which covers the events between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The gameplay is said to be similar to that of its predecessors, but LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens does include some new mechanics, such as space dogfights, Blaster Battles which use a cover system, and Multi-Builds where players can choose from multiple building options to solve puzzles and open up new paths.

Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book is the latest installment in the popular Atelier series by Japanese developer Gust. The upcoming role-playing game follows a girl named Sophie Neuenmuller who runs an atelier on the outskirts of a small medieval town. Sophie has the mysterious power to combine items in order to form new ones, but with no one to guide her, her attempts often fail. One day she encounters a mysterious talking book, and, aided by its knowledge, sets out to unlock the secrets of alchemy.

Final Fantasy XV Box Art

Final Fantasy XV is the latest installment in the highly popular Japanese action RPG franchise. The game puts the player into the shoes of Noctis Lucis Caelum, the heir to the kingdom of Lucis, which is the last nation to possess a Crystal. Other countries in the game’s world – a single landmass called Eos – have been conquered by the technologically-advanced Empire of Niflheim, which now threatens Lucis as well.

Final Fantasy XV features vast, open environments which can be explored on foot, using party’s car, or chocobos, with loading screens only appearing when entering towns. The game uses a seamless, real-time battle system called AXB (Active X Battle); the players only control the protagonist, Noctis, but can issue commands to their companions.

DOOM  Box Art

DOOM is a reboot of the classic first-person shooter series by id Software. The new installment targets 1080p at 60 FPS on the consoles, with higher resolutions available on the PC (FPS is still locked at 60). The game features a large variety of weapons, including classics such as the chainsaw or the super shotgun. The new combat system encourages players to keep pushing forward, as enemies drop ammo and health packs when killed.

In addition to single player, DOOM also has multiplayer with several modes such as deathmatch and freeze tag. Furthermore, it includes a level editing tool called SnapMap, which allows the players to create their own maps and game modes.

Star Fox Zero is a 3D scrolling shooter developed by Nintendo and PlatinumGames for the Wii U console. Neither a sequel nor a prequel, the title is a re-imagining of the classic Star Fox 64 with some new gameplay elements and locations. Players are shown a third-person view on the TV and an alternate cockpit view on the GamePad, and are now able to shoot in one direction while flying in another.

The game is available digitally through Nintendo eShop for $50, while retail versions are priced at $60. That being said, the latter include Star Fox Guard, a standalone tower defense game, as a bonus.
