Spider-Man: Edge of Time Costumes

The second Spider-Man title developed by Activision-owned Beenox studio is scheduled to come out in October this year. The game will run on all major consoles and feature a story written by Peter David.

Like the name suggests, the plot of the game involves copious amounts of time travel. Edge of Time will feature both Amazing and 2099 universes, similarly to its prequel Shattered Dimensions. Both Spider-Men will have to fight together against the Big Bad, Walter Sloane, who (typically enough) is trying to take over the world. Other notable characters include Mary Jane, Anti-Venom, Sandman, and an original Black Cat 2099.

FIFA 12

EA comes up with a new FIFA title every year, and this one is no exception. FIFA Soccer 12, to be released on September 27th in the US, offers a variety of new features and gameplay improvements. Chief among them is the new Player Impact Engine on which EA developers have toiled away for two years. According to the official sources, it will allow for realistic results from player collisions on the pitch. This new physics engine will be able to tell whether the player was injured, and which part of their body was damaged.

Other improvements include Tactical Defending, Precision Dribbling, and better AI which considers the strengths of their teammates when making decisions. The game is said to include over 500 licensed clubs and 15.000 players, more authentic crowds and easier navigation.

X-Men Destiny Preorder Costumes

Silicon Knights is working on a new X-Men game, one that will be released for consoles at the end of September this year. X-Men Destiny will offer a non-linear storyline and allow the players to choose their allegiances and powers, which will affect the ultimate fate of their character.

Speaking of characters, the game will have three playable ones. First off is Grant Alexander, an American college student and football player who was indifferent to the human / mutant conflict until he awakened his own powers. The second is Aimi Yoshida, a Japanese teenager whose parents sent her to San Francisco to save her from incarceration in a mutant camp. Finally, there’s Adrian Luca, a member of the Purifiers (an anti-mutant organization) who was trained to hate mutants before discovering that he is one himself.

X-Men fans might be disappointed to not be able to play their favorite characters from the franchise. However, lots of them will make an appearance in the game (even though they won’t be playable), and you will also be able to equip some of their powers using the X-gene system.

Gears of War 3 Pre-Order Bonuses

Epic Games is currently working on the third (and final) part of the Gears of War trilogy, which is scheduled for a September 2011 release. The upcoming Gears of War 3 will introduce a four-player co-op campaign, new playable characters (including three female ones), and new weapons. Furthermore, a Silverback mech suit armed with a rocket launcher and a machinegun will be available in certain parts of the game.

If that got you excited, just wait till you hear about the additional Locust and Lambent enemy types, as well as new executions you can finish them off with – such as the Bayonet Charge. There will be new multiplayer modes as well, like the Beast mode: a reverse Horde mode where you and up to four other players fight as Locusts against waves of COGs.

Gears of War 3 will take place one-and-a-half years after the end of the second game. Cliff Bleszinski, the design director at Epic Games, has said that GoW3 will “answer the majority of the questions that players have about the history of the world and what’s going on” and “be the conclusion to a trilogy”.

Dead Island

Dead Island is a first-person, open-world survival RPG, highly anticipated by zombie fans. The game will take place in a fictional Banoi island near Papua New Guinea. The players will start in a five-star hotel, Royal Palms Resort, where a zombie outbreak suddenly takes place.

Dead Island is going to offer four named playable characters, each with their own skill tree and upgradeable abilities. Performing an action – such as swinging a weapon or sprinting – will consume stamina, which is regenerated as you rest. The game will have a large number of ranged and melee weapons, many of which you will be able to modify and improve. These customizations will range from hammering a few nails into a baseball bat for increased damage, to more complex weapon mods.

Madden 12 will feature a number of improvements and additions, such as a new tackling system, enhanced defensive AI, custom playbooks, and online communities. The Franchise mode has also been improved with new features like dynamic player performance, expanded rosters and cut days, new rookie scouting system, and more. Josh Looman, the senior designer in charge of the Franchise mode, even calls it “the most in-depth career mode game ever”.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a cyberpunk first person shooter / role-playing game, and the third title in the Deus Ex series. It is a prequel to the original game and takes place 25 years earlier, when human augmentation is still in the experimental stages. DX: HR is developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix.

The protagonist of the game is Adam Jensen, a security specialist working for a biotech corporation who gets critically wounded during an attack on his workplace, and forcibly augmented with cybernetic parts to save his life. Improve your abilities with even stronger “augs” and uncover a dark plot to take control over mankind!

Conspiracy theories, transhumanism and “Cyber Renaissance” are the main themes of Human Revolution. Like in the first Deus Ex game, you will have a choice about how to accomplish missions and proceed with the story: by using stealth, talking your way through, hacking various electronic systems (2D minigame), or just good old FPS-style shooting.

Dungeon Siege 3

Dungeon Siege III is an upcoming action RPG game set for release in June 2011. It is the first Dungeon Siege game to be developed by Obsidian Entertainment (the makers of Neverwinter Nights 2 and Fallout: New Vegas). As such, it’s going to be quite different from its predecessors.

While the game will still take place in the Kingdom of Ehb (the same setting as the original DS), the gameplay, leveling, and dialogue systems have undergone numerous changes.  We’ll talk about them in a minute, but for now, let’s see what kind of goodies you can get if you reserve a copy of this game before the launch date.

Shadows of the Damned Box Art

Shadows of the Damned

What do you get when you combine the talents of Suda 51 (No More Heroes) and Shinji Mikami (Resident Evil)? The answer is Shadows of the Damned, a twisted third-person shooter for consoles that takes place in the underworld.

The protagonist of the game is Garcia Hotspur, a badass demon hunter clad in a leather jacket and armed with an array of unusual weapons – like a handgun called “Big Boner” (I kid you not). Garcia’s hot girlfriend Paula was kidnapped by demons from hell, so now he has to travel to the City of the Damned and rescue her from the clutches of the demon king Fleming.

Shadows of the Damned features a punk-rock theme with dark and macabre environments, outlandish humor and creative monster designs. The soundtrack by the British gothic punk band, the Damned, and video game composer Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill) also contributes to the thrilling atmosphere of the game.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Box Art

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Transformers: DotM is an upcoming third-person shooter from High Moon Studios, the people who brought us the well-received War for Cybertron last year. The game is a tie-in for the movie of the same name that opens in theaters on July 1st. It is set right before the events in the film, and offers 18 missions in various locations on Earth, ranging from jungles to urban environments and military bases.

The gameplay of Transformers: Dark of the Moon should be similar to that of War for Cybertron: a 3rd-person shooter where players can switch between robot and vehicle forms and use different weapons depending on their class. Perhaps the biggest addition is the new Stealth Mode – a hybrid form that gives you access to the impressive firepower of the robot weapons without sacrificing your speed.

L.A. Noire

L.A. Noire is a highly anticipated action-adventure game from the devs of Team Bondi and Rockstar that will be released for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles in May this year.

The game will put you in the shoes of Cole Phelps, an aspiring detective working for the LAPD in the post-war Los Angeles during the 1940s. Violent crimes and drug trafficking are on the rise, mafia controls the city underground, and even the government officials are corrupt. The young detective will definitely have his work cut out for him.

The gameplay of L.A. Noire will involve solving cases of varying difficulty. The players will have some freedom in how they want to go about doing that: investigate the crime scene, interview (or interrogate) people, and so on. There will be different routes available for most cases, and false evidence to boot. Unlike GTA though, it’s not going to be an open-world sandbox, but rather a story-driven game.

Brink

Brink is a new first-person shooter under development by Splash Damage, the British game studio that brought us Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. It will feature class-based single player, co-op and multiplayer modes, which will be integrated seamlessly. For example, experience can be earned both in single player and multiplayer, and your friends can join your game even in the middle of a mission.

Brink is set in a post-apocalyptic world, with two factions (Resistance and Security) fighting for control over a floating city called the Ark. The city can’t support a growing population due to the limited resources available, so the Ark is on the brink of a civil war.

The game will allow the players to perform various freerunning moves using a single SMART (Smooth Movement Across Random Terrain) button which predicts what you’re trying to do depending on your position. As a result, complex moves can be executed with simple controls, similarly to Mirror’s Edge. However, experienced players will be able to accomplish the same thing manually, which will take less time and give them an edge over the others.

Portal 2

Portal 2 is an upcoming sequel to Valve’s wildly popular game Portal, which came out back in 2007. According to the developers, it is going to be at least twice as long as the original. Portal 2 will also include new gameplay elements (such as the Repulsion Gel) and more complex puzzles.

Besides the single player campaign, the game will offer a multiplayer co-op mode which will allow players to take control of two cute robots and use teamwork to progress through the dangerous levels.

Portal 2 plot

In the updated ending of the original game, Chell (the protagonist) gets dragged away by an unseen robot and loses consciousness. The story of Portal 2 will pick up several hundred years later, with Chell waking up from a stasis and finding herself in a now-decrepit Aperture Science facility. Of course, our favorite insane AI – GLaDOS – is still alive, and eager to do science again. As for the aforementioned co-op mode, it will have its own unique plot and setting.

Dragon Age 2

Dragon Age 2 is a sequel to the dark fantasy RPG series Dragon Age developed by Bioware. The game will take place some time after the Blight of Ferelden in the original DA:O, and feature a new protagonist: Hawke, a Blight survivor from Lothering.

Unlike in the first game, the main character of DA2 will be fully voiced; players will be able to choose their gender and class, but not the race. It is going to be similar to the Mass Effect series in this regard. Bioware promises an epic story that will span over a decade and follow your rise to power. You’ll also have several opportunities for romance with party members and other NPCs.

Some characters from Dragon Age: Origins will make an appearance in DA2, including Flemeth, the Witch of the Wilds. Hawke will meet her before she is killed by the Warden in the original game. Players will also be able to import their game saves, so the choices they made in Origins or Awakening will be reflected in the world of Dragon Age II.
