Dragon Age 2 is a sequel to the dark fantasy RPG series Dragon Age developed by Bioware. The game will take place some time after the Blight of Ferelden in the original DA:O, and feature a new protagonist: Hawke, a Blight survivor from Lothering.

Unlike in the first game, the main character of DA2 will be fully voiced; players will be able to choose their gender and class, but not the race. It is going to be similar to the Mass Effect series in this regard. Bioware promises an epic story that will span over a decade and follow your rise to power. You’ll also have several opportunities for romance with party members and other NPCs.

Some characters from Dragon Age: Origins will make an appearance in DA2, including Flemeth, the Witch of the Wilds. Hawke will meet her before she is killed by the Warden in the original game. Players will also be able to import their game saves, so the choices they made in Origins or Awakening will be reflected in the world of Dragon Age II.

Dragon Age 2 trailer

Dragon Age II features numerous improvements to the graphics engine. That’s something console gamers are going to like, seeing how the graphics of DA:O were less than satisfactory in the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions. You can see a few bits of gameplay in the epic Rise to Power trailer below:

Update: a free Dragon Age II demo will be available for download on February 22nd! You’ll get to try the character creation system, play through the prologue, and see Kirkwall, a new location in the Dragon Age world. The best part is, those who finish the demo are going to receive an exclusive weapon – Hayder’s Razor – when the game is released. Download it here.

So we’ll all be playing Hawke, the only choice will be the looks and the gender. Looks like Bioware is taking a leaf out of Mass Effect’s book (Champion Hawke = Commander Shepard). ME was a fun and successful game, so this might work for DA2 as well. I guess this will let them make the story and dialogues feel more personal. Not a bad thing. But I do miss the times of Neverwinter Nights when we had total freedom in crafting our character.
