Hearts of Iron IV is war strategy game made by Paradox Development Studio, well known for their grand strategy franchises like Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings. Like its predecessors, the upcoming game is set in World War II and allows the player to lead any nation during the conflict.

The intricate gameplay involves elements like waging war, managing production, espionage, and negotiation. Compared to the previous installments, Hearts of Iron IV is also said to be more accessible, have better AI, and feature a less rigid, sandbox-style gameplay.

Pre-order bonuses

Hearts of Iron IV comes in three different editions: Cadet, Colonel, and Field Marshal. Any of them includes the following pre-order incentives:

  • German Marchorder Music Pack: additional songs while playing countries part of the Axis powers, composed by Andreas Waldetoft.
  • Allied Radio Music Pack: 4 songs to be played while playing countries part of the Allies coalition, created by Tobias Gustafsson.
  • Hearts of Iron: War Stories: a Game Book with a branching narrative where the player’s choices influence which skills they learn, relationships with other characters, and ultimately the story’s outcome. The first of these stories is written by Aaron Rosenburg and features a young British RAF pilot during the Battle of Britain. The Hearts of Iron: War Stories app is available for iOS and Android.

In addition, all players also get a free DLC called Polish: United and Ready, which adds a unique focus tree for Poland, new models for tanks and planes, 2D assets, and extra leader portraits for increased historical accuracy.

Cadet Edition

The standard edition of HoI IV costs $39.99 and includes the base game, plus a Cadet icon for the official Paradox forums and a wallpaper if you pre-order.

Colonel Edition

HoI IV Colonel Edition

The Colonel Edition is priced at $49.99 and adds the following extras on top of everything mentioned so far:

  • Heavy Cruiser Pack: 7 heavy cruisers available for both Axis and Allies – Exeter, Prinz Eugen and Mogami amongst others.
  • Soviet Tank Pack: 8 tanks for when playing as Soviets, ranging from light all the way up to Super Heavy.
  • US Tank Pack: 8 tanks for when playing as USA, ranging from light all the way up to Super Heavy.
  • British Tank Pack: 8 tanks for when playing as United Kingdom, ranging from light all the way up to Super Heavy.
  • German Tank Pack: 8 tanks for when playing as Germany, ranging from light all the way up to Super Heavy.
  • French Tank Pack: 8 tanks for when playing as France, ranging from light all the way up to Super Heavy.
  • Wallpapers: wallpapers made with art from the game.
  • Colonel Forum Icon: an icon that can be used on Paradox own forum.

All the DLC packs are purely cosmetic and merely change the appearance of the units in the game.

Field Marshal Edition

This $89.99 edition contains all the digital content from the Colonel Edition, plus a Field Marshal forum icon, unique avatars, an art book, and an Expansion Pass. The pass includes the first two future expansions and their related content, for an estimated value of $49.99.

Hearts of Iron IV is scheduled to be released on June 6, 2016. The game requires Steam to play.
