Shogun 2 is an upcoming title in the Total War strategy game series developed by The Creative Assembly and published by Sega. The developers are going back to the roots of the franchise and remaking their first game with better graphics, smarter AI (said to be based on the principles of Sun Tzu’s “Art of War”) and vastly improved gameplay.

Shogun 2 will take you to the 16th century Japan which is devastated after a 10 year long civil war. You will have to take control of one warring clans and unite the country under your rule. There will be 9 playable clans in total, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.

The clan leaders (daimyo) are going to play an important role on the battlefield and have unique abilities. Also new in Shogun 2 are powerful hero units which add yet another layer of strategy to the game. These won’t be invincible one man armies, but they will have special skills, such as dealing bonus damage against cavalry or boosting the morale of your troops.

Shogun 2 preorder bonus

If you pre-order Total War: Shogun 2 from certain retailers, you will receive the Limited Edition which includes 1 extra playable faction (Hattori ninja clan), an additional historical scenario (The Battle of Nagashino), exclusive armor for your general, and an extra upgrade point.

  • GameStop (US): Limited Edition + exclusive “Battle of Kawagoe” bonus
  • Amazon (US, International): Limited Edition
  • GAME (UK, EU) – two different editions are available:
    • Limited Edition (same as everywhere else)
    • Limited Edition with Exclusive Chess Set (aka Grand Master Edition)
  • Best Buy (US): does NOT offer the Limited Edition of Shogun II. “Best Buy Exclusive Edition” is available instead, which includes 1,000 Koku (in-game currency) for purchasing buildings, units and upgrades.
  • GamersGate (digital download): 15,000 Blue Coins (which is basically $15 store credit)

The other popular digital download store, Steam, seems to be offering only the standard edition of the game (in other words, no bonus).

Game features

Shogun II will have the same hybrid gameplay that is a signature of the Total War series: managing your realm in turn-based campaign mode, and fighting epic 3D battles in real time. It will offer a better diplomacy and politics system than the previous titles, and feature agents like ninjas and geisha assassins. The developers claim the game will be more streamlined and accessible (but not dumbed down).

TW: Shogun 2 will have less unit types than its predecessors; players will have to pay more attention to the strengths and weaknesses of the units when raising their armies. Special units like generals and agents will gain experience points which can be used to improve their abilities. The sieges and naval battles have been redesigned with the Medieval Japan setting in mind (detailed, multi-tiered citadels and “floating castle” ships).

The graphics of Shogun II are going to be the most impressive of all TW games so far. Combined with detailed units and gorgeous artwork, this should make for some great eye candy. The devs reported that the graphics engine of Shogun 2 will be capable of displaying up to 56,000 units on the battlefield (although we won’t necessarily see battles of that scope).

The game will have multiplayer battles and 8-player campaigns similar to those in Napoleon: Total War. Multiplayer features include an achievement system through Steam, unlockable powers and cosmetic upgrades for your general (remember, you also get one special outfit with your Shogun II preorder) and an online ladder. A new addition is a co-op mode where one player assumes the role of the daimyo and others take control of the clan armies.
