Sunset Overdrive is an open-world third-person shooter developed by Insomniac Games and published by Microsoft exclusively for Xbox One consoles. It takes place in year 2027, when a zombie apocalypse of sorts strikes the fictional Sunset City due to a new energy drink, OverCharge Delirium XT, turning its drinkers into crazed mutants. As the one tasked with cleaning up after the launch party, the protagonist is one of the few people left unaffected.
Sunset Overdrive features highly dynamic and fluid gameplay centered around speedy traversal. Players who keep moving while blowing up the plentiful enemies are rewarded with Style points. Destruction comes easy with the variety of wacky weapons available: Roman Candle launches multicolored fireworks, High Fidelity shoots vinyl records, and TnTeddy combines the cuteness of a teddy bear with the explosive power of dynamite – and that’s just the beginning. The game is bright, colorful, and, in the words of the developers, completely irreverent.
All Sunset Overdrive pre-orders get the Day One edition, which includes includes a Nothin’ but the Hits gun, Hardcore! Hammer melee weapon, and It’s Me! Fizzie! outfit. In addition, the following retailers have some exclusive offers for those who reserve a copy with them:
- Microsoft Store: Acordes de la Muerte as well as The Hangover melee weapons, and a $10 Xbox gift card.
- Best Buy: Fizzco Bot outfit, AK-FOFF gun, and an OverCharge-branded koozie to keep your canned beverages cool.
- Amazon: Hotty Shotty gun and Wasteland outfit.
- GameStop: OD Wannabe outfit and Head-Banger gun.
- Walmart: S’more Action melee weapon.
The game is also available bundled with a white Xbox One console, Day One goodies included. You should be able to find this bundle at your favorite retailer.
Judging from the trailer, the fourth wall is broken frequently in the upcoming game.
Sunset Overdrive is scheduled to be released on October 28, 2014 in North America, and October 31 in Europe. It has already gone gold, so there’s no chance of anything delaying the imminent Awesomepocalypse.
