Portal Knights is a cooperative sandbox RPG which mixes elements of block-building and role-playing games. The story takes place in a rich fantasy world and is said to offer 40 to 50 hours of gameplay. It begins with the protagonist awakening atop a snowy mountain, with no memories of who he is and how he got there. When he is attacked by a giant monster, a beautiful girl with animal ears and a tail comes to his rescue.

The plot of Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception unfolds through a linear visual novel boasting great art and background soundtrack. Integrated with that is a turn-based RPG battle system with various mechanics like elemental affinities and combo attacks that add depth to the combat encounters. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a tactical RPG by Japanese developer Intelligent Systems. The game is set in the continent of Valentia, where a war between the nations of Rigel and Zofia has erupted. Players will lead their armies as protagonists Alm and Celica to bring peace back to the war-torn lands.

Five future DLC packs have already been announced for the game. Players may purchase a Season Pass for $44.99 and save 30% as compared to buying each item individually, according to Nintendo. Akiba’s Beat is an action RPG developed by Japanese studio Acquire and published by Marvelous USA (XSEED Games) in North America. In this third title from the Akiba series, players take control of Asahi Tachibana, a NEET who becomes trapped in a day-long time loop along with the other main characters. The game puts a fantastical spin on the Tokyo’s Akihabara ward, with real-life landscapes meshing with surreal “Delusionscapes”.

The Surge is a sci-fi themed action RPG developed by German studio Deck13 and published by Focus Home Interactive. The game is set in a dystopian world ravaged by war and global warming, and takes place in an automated industrial complex of mega-corporation CREO which has gone rogue. While the hostile mechanical monstrosities prowling the complex pose a lethal threat, the protagonist is an augmented, exo-suit wearing human who is up for the challenge.

The developers promise a hardcore and unforgiving, Souls-like experience where even the weaker enemies are deadly if the player isn’t aware of their attack patterns and weaknesses. Dragon Quest Heroes II is a hack-and-slash action RPG which combines the world and characters of Dragon Quest with combat mechanics from Dynasty Warriors. Players will set out on a new adventure to protect the Seven Realms, battling hordes of monsters and exploring diverse and expansive environments. The playstyle is said to be more customizable than in the first installment thanks to the ability to change vocations (Warrior, Priest, Mage, and so on). The game supports online co-op for up to 4 players.

Shiness: The Lightning Kingdom is an action RPG developed by French indie studio Enigami, and published by Focus Home Interactive. The crowdfunded game features manga-style art, and in fact has a companion manga series, which offers clues towards discovering hidden quests.

Persona 5 is a role-playing game developed by Atlus for PlayStation 3 & 4. It follows a 16-year-old protagonist who is transferred to a high school in Tokyo after being put on probation for assaulting a stalker. He and several other students awaken their Persona powers and form a group called the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, the goal of which is to steal ill intent from the hearts of corrupt adults and reform them.

Vikings: Wolves of Midgard is an isometric action RPG developed by Games Farm and published by Kalypso Media. The game’s world is based on Norse mythology, with mighty Jotan and terrifying undead monsters roaming the lands. As deadly Fimbulwinter winds blow across Midgard, and Ragnarok seems all but inevitable, a band of notorious Viking warriors – the eponymous Wolves of Midgard – stand defiant against the oncoming armies of Frost Giants. Mass Effect: Andromeda puts the player into the shoes of Ryder, a Pathfinder tasked with finding new worlds to colonize and ensure the survival of humanity. The game starts with the main character arriving in the titular Andromeda galaxy after a six hundred year long cryosleep. Representatives of other major Milky Way civilizations are also making the journey on their own Ark ships, and Andromeda itself is home to at least two new alien races: the warlike Khet and the mysterious Remnant.

Andromeda retains most of the gameplay elements seen in the previous Mass Effect installments. Nexus, the Flagship of the fleet, serves as a Citadel-esque central hub, whereas Ryder can explore the new galaxy on Tempest, the successor of Normandy. Toukiden 2 is an upcoming action RPG developed by Omega Force and published by Koei Tecmo. Set two years after the events in Kiwami, it follows a Slayer who fought in the defense of the city of Yokohama and was swallowed by a portal, emerging in Mahoroba Village ten years later with no memories of the past.

One major change from its predecessors is that Toukiden 2 now features an open world, with Mahoroba Village serving as the game’s main hub. The entire cast of Slayers, as well as non-combatant NPCs, make a return in the upcoming title. There also are new characters, Oni, and Mitama.

The Binding of Isaac, a popular 2D action RPG with roguelike elements, is about to see a release on the upcoming Nintendo Switch platform. Made by independent developer Nicalis, the game has enjoyed great popularity on the PC, consoles, and handhelds so far.

The version that will be released on Switch, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, essentially includes all DLC expansions so far (Rebirth, Afterbirth and Afterbirth+) in one package. Styx: Shards of Darkness is a fantasy-themed action RPG with a focus on stealth. Like its predecessors Of Orcs And Men and Styx: Master of Shadows, it is developed by Cyanide and published by Focus Home Interactive, both French companies. The game runs on a new engine (Unreal 4) and offers many improvements thanks to its bigger budget, according to the publisher.

Shards of Darkness picks up where Master of Shadows left off. After the fall of the Akenash tower, the eponymous goblin assassin, Styx, is forced out of hiding to infiltrate Körangar. While this city of the Dark Elves is supposedly impregnable, a diplomatic summit offers Styx a chance to slip in unnoticed. There, he learns that elves and dwarves, who are enemies of old, are joining forces against the goblins.

NieR: Automata is an action RPG developed by Japanese studio PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix. It is set in an open world and contains three playable characters, which are unlocked after clearing the previous protagonist’s story route.

Plot-wise, the game takes place an unknown number of years after the events in the original Nier. In an ongoing war between the remnants of humanity and machine invaders from another world, the players control humanity’s strongest weapons, combat androids called YoRHa. Torment: Tides of Numenera is an old-school RPG developed by inXile Entertainment and published by Techland Publishing. Having raised over $5 million through Kickstarter, it holds the honor of being one of the highest-funded games on the platform. Adapted from the popular manga series Berserk, this M-rated hack-and-slash game follows lone mercenary Guts in his quest to take down every last one of the demonic Apostles. Armed with a vast array of different weapons, players can utilize them to their full potential against hordes of enemies in Dynasty Warriors style, one-vs-many battles. Berserk and the Band of the Hawk includes as many as eight playable characters (such as Griffith, Casca, and Schierke), each with their own different fighting styles.
