Immortals: Fenyx Rising – previously known as Gods and Monsters – is an upcoming third-person action-adventure game from Ubisoft. Players take on the role of the titular Fenyx, a winged demigod, and embark on a quest to save the Greek gods from a dark curse. Fenyx can be played as male or female with a customizable appearance.
Fenyx Rising features a stylized open world across seven unique regions that can be freely explored and offers side-quests and puzzles outside of the main storyline. The player can upgrade Fenyx’s gear and skills, and acquire powerful godlike gifts such as the sword of Achilles or the bow of Odysseus.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a spin-off of the main The Legend of Zelda series developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja, the makers of Dynasty Warriors franchise. It plays similarly to the Musou games the developer is famed for, pitting heroes like Link and Zelda against hordes of barbaric Bokoblins, towering Lynels, and other foes.
Like the title suggests, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity takes place during the second Great Calamity, when Ganon plunged Hyrule into darkness a century before the events in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an action-adventure game developed by Insomniac Games exclusively for PlayStation. Story-wise, it picks up where Marvel’s Spider-Man and its DLC The City that Never Sleeps left off, with teenager Miles Morales being bitten by a genetically enhanced spider and gaining powers similar to Peter Parker’s.
Releasing alongside Miles Morales is the remastered first Marvel’s Spider-Man game with all its DLC. It won’t be available for purchase separately, however: players will have to buy either the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition for PS5, which includes a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered, or buy the regular Miles Morales edition for PS4 and acquire Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered as a paid upgrade.
Norse-themed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla brings raiding, settlement building, and more advanced RPG elements to the franchise. The game’s story centers around Eivor: a fierce viking raider and member of the Assassins, who alongside his or her clan sails from the harsh Norway in search of richer lands. Arriving on the shores of England, Eivor’s clan establishes a village that will prosper and grow as a consequence of the player’s efforts. From this settlement the Vikings can launch brutal raids against Saxon fortresses throughout the lands.
While Valhalla is a single player game, it does have some online components. For example, it is possible to create and share custom mercenaries – Jomsviking – that can then be recruited by the player’s friends and fight alongside them in their campaign.
Little Hope is the second standalone installment in Supermassive Games’ horror game anthology The Dark Pictures. It centers around four college students and their professor, who get stranded in an abandoned town of Little Hope following a bus accident. The town is surrounded by an impenetrable fog that is filled with nightmarish apparitions.
The Dark Pictures: Little Hope can be played alone, in Shared Story mode with a friend online, and in Movie Night mode where up to five players can pass the pad to each other controlling each of the game’s characters. Much like its predecessor, Man of Medan, the upcoming game has a Curator’s Cut that enhances replayability, and early access to this mode is offered as a bonus to pre-order customers.
Watch Dogs Legion is an open-world action-adventure game from Ubisoft. Taking place in a dystopian near-future version of London that is swarming with surveillance drones and deportation squads, it involves recruiting ordinary people into the hacktivist group DedSec to take a stand against the authoritarian government and greedy corporations.
An ambitious system called Play as Anyone allows the player to recruit and play as any procedurally generated NPC – be they an old lady or a hulking gangster. Each recruit possesses their own unique backstory and skill set, and can be swapped between according to mission requirements.
Mafia: Definitive Edition is a ground-up remake of the 2002 title Mafia that went on to spawn a popular trilogy. Taking place in a fictional city of Lost Heaven during the Prohibition era, the game follows Tommy Angelo, a hard-working cabbie who becomes involved with the Salieri crime family.
The game can be purchased as a standalone for $39.99 or as a part of the Mafia: Trilogy bundle for $59.99. The latter also contains Mafia II: Definitive Edition and Mafia III: Definitive Edition, both of which include all previously released story DLC and bonus packs.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is a cross-genre game developed by Japanese studio Vanillaware of Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown fame. It combines side-scrolling adventure with real-time strategy combat in an original sci-fi setting.
The adventure segments lean on dialogue and exploration, and feature thirteen protagonists with intertwining storylines. The combat involves controlling up to six chosen characters, who pilot Sentinel mechs and defend humanity from giant monsters, the kaijuu.
Marvel’s Avengers is a third-person action-adventure game that tells an original story beginning with the unveiling of the Avengers Headquarters in San Francisco. When an experimental reactor powering their Helicarrier explodes devastating the city, the Avengers are blamed for the casualties and are forced to disband. Years later, a young Kamala Khan sets out to reassemble the Avengers and stop the villain organization AIM.
Marvel’s Avengers can be played solo or in an online co-op of up to four players. The heroes can be customized with unlockable gear and skills. The game’s cinematic story will continue in content drops post-launch, with new regions and heroes delivered free of charge as long as the player already owns the core game.
No Straight Roads is an action-adventure game with rhythm-based combat developed by an independent Malaysian studio Metronomik, for who this will be their debut release. In single-player mode, the player controls either Mayday or Zuke – an indie rock duo, who set out to topple the EDM empire that controls Vinyl City, the world capital of music.
No Straight Roads can also be played by two players in a couch co-op on any platform. Exclusive to Nintendo Switch is the Assist Mode, which allows a third player to join and assist in battles.
Developed by Black Forest Games, Destroy All Humans! is a remake of the classic 2005 game for current-gen platforms. It is a humorous third-person action-adventure where the player controls Cryptosporidium 137 – Crypto for short – an alien who arrives to 1950s America to harvest human DNA.
Crypto possesses a vast arsenal of unique weaponry and mental powers that can annihilate the puny humans and reduce their primitive cities to rubble – and the gameplay in fact encourages destruction. In contrast to the original, the remake allows combining of Crypto’s abilities for new and creative ways to cause mayhem.
Ghost of Tsushima is an action-adventure game developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony. It takes place in 13th century Japan, and follows Jin Sakai, one of the last samurai left alive on the island of Tsushima after it was devastated by a Mongol invasion fleet. To liberate his homeland, Jin must set aside the rigid teachings of the samurai and embrace the path of a Ghost.
The game features an open world that can be freely roamed on foot and horseback. The combat involves copious amounts of swordplay as well as stealth and more unconventional tactics such as smoke bombs.
Hideo Kojima’s sci-fi epic Death Stranding is making its way to the PC courtesy of publisher 505 Games. The game runs at up to 4K with unlocked framerate provided you have a capable system and supports ultrawide monitors. The Photo Mode, which was added to its PlayStation 4 counterpart after launch, will be available on the PC port from the start. Perhaps the most intriguing addition are side-missions that cross over into Valve’s Half-Life and Portal universes.
The latest title from developers at Camouflaj, Marvel’s Iron Man VR allows the player to step into the shoes of the genius inventor Tony Stark. Tony might have retired from making weapons, but when Stark Industries locations around the world are attacked by a hacker and anti-corporate activist Ghost, he’s forced to don the Iron Man suit once more.
The game is designed from the ground up for VR and requires two PlayStation Move controllers to play.
Joel and Ellie’s story continues in The Last of Us Part II, this time with the latter acting as the protagonist. After five years of peaceful life in Jackson, Ellie’s love interest is kidnapped by another group of survivors, causing her to set out on a path of vengeance – and Joel won’t let her do it alone.
Developer Naughty Dog promises new combat and stealth mechanics, more realistic animations to fully express Ellie’s desperation and resourcefulness, vaster environments, and smarter human enemies. The game runs on an overhauled engine and utilizes motion capture to bring its new and returning characters to life. Unlike its predecessor, it doesn’t have multiplayer.
Humans kill over a hundred million sharks every year. In the same time span, sharks only kill five humans. Tripwire’s action RPG Maneater promises to even those odds.
Players take control of a baby bull shark and explore, eat, and fight their way through oceans, rivers, and swamps to become the ultimate murder machine. Take a bite out of too many humans, and bounty hunters are called in. Besides those, the shark also has to contend with apex predators and other dangers lurking in the water.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is an action-adventure game from Omega Force that follows Luffy and the Straw Hat pirates from the beginning of their journey to find the titular legendary treasure. Moreover, it includes an original retelling of the Wano Country arc currently ongoing in the anime series.
Pirate Warriors 4 features a cast of over 40 playable characters, including fan-favorites like Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and others. The game boasts large-scale Musou style battles that the developer is renowned for, destructible environments, and many iconic moments from the anime and manga in a new medium. Also new is the ability to execute attacks mid-air, which will be available to all characters. The game can be tackled solo or with a friend offline, and in a co-op of up to four players online. The online co-op offers exclusive missions.
Half-Life: Alyx is a VR-exclusive shooter and the first entry in the series since 2007. It is not the long-awaited continuation to Half-Life 2: Episode 2, but rather a tie-in that takes place between the events of the first and second games. Players take control of Alyx Vance, and together with her father Eli, mount a resistance against the Combine’s invasion of Earth.
The game is built from ground-up for VR, and supports every SteamVR-compatible headset including HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, and Valve’s own Index. Input-wise, it works with both button-based and modern finger tracking systems.
Journey to the Savage Planet is a colorful and upbeat first-person exploration game developed by Typhoon Studios. Players take on the role of an interstellar explorer who gets dropped into an uncharted world AR-Y 26 to catalog the alien flora and fauna that inhabit it. Gameplay involves exploring the planet, analyzing and facing off against its wacky creatures, and upgrading gear to open up new areas.
Journey to the Savage Planet can be tackled solo or in an online co-op with a friend.
Shenmue III is an open-world action-adventure game developed by Ys Net – the company headed by the director, writer, and producer of the previous Shenmue installments Yu Suzuki – and published by Deep Silver. After years of development hell, it will finally see a release thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Shenmue III continues the story of teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki, whose search for his father’s killer takes him to rural China. He is accompanied by Shenhua, a mysterious girl from the Bailu Village which is the game’s starting location.
Those new to Shenmue will have the opportunity to catch up to the story thanks to a special “recap digest” movie by Yu Suzuki that is included with the upcoming game.
